WELCOME

The 4^th International Meeting in Paediatric Neuromuscular Rehabilitation will take place in Denmark on May 18^th - 20^th 2006. The Organizational Committee invites all health care workers involved at a practical or theoretical level in the rehabilitation of children and youngsters with neuromuscular disorders such as the muscular dystrophies, myopathies, spinal muscular atrophies, peripheral nerve disorders and myasthenia gravis.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Exon Skipping with U7 gene transfer.

The report enclosed is about research being done at the Généthon Institute in Evry near Paris by the team of Olivier Danos and Luis García. This new technique is a combination of exon skipping and the transfer of a gene that instructs the muscle cells to make continuously the antisense-oligonucleotides (AONs) themselves so that they do not have to be injected repeatedly. The AONs are potential drugs which are able to modify the genetic information in such a way that the fast progressing Duchenne muscular dystrophy is converted into the much slower developing Becker muscular dystrophy.

I did not write this report for scientists but rather I tried to explain a complicated genetic technique for people who have not studied modern molecular biology but who at least know some basic facts about the cause of a genetic disease like Duchenne dystrophy and how genes are functioning. All my reports of the last 3 years, also this one, can now be seen on the internet at www.duchenne-research.com. This new report is sent as a pdf file, if you cannot open it, please let me know and I will send it to you as a Word file. German and Spanish translations are also on my internet pages. Only some tanslations into French have been done, but, as this new report does not exist yet in French, all those on my "French" address list are getting this e-mail also.

Jag heter Birgitta Eriksson. Jag har en pojke som är 3 och ett halvt år och han har Duchennes muskeldystrofi. Jag skulle vilja informera allmänheten om hur allvarliga muskelsjukdomar faktiskt kan vara. Min idé är att hitta en intresserad journalist som kan göra några dokumentärprogram om just dessa barn och deras familjer, habilitering och andra engagerade personer. När man har fått ut information till allmänheten skulle man kunna starta insamlingar och eventuellt en insamlingsgala i TV, för att få ihop pengar till forskning. Om det finns någon som känner intresse för detta så hör gärna av er.
